Sri Lanka

Things which strike me most about Sri Lanka:

it is an island :), the wilderness, water all around, wildlife, buddhism, cleanliness, amount of car part shops along the roads (you can buy half a car there if you need one), good driving, colonial legacy, tamil tigers, the 26 year long war, stupas, king coconuts and elephants munching on them, cashews, spice gardens, vegetation, giant bamboos, floods and landslides, jack fruits, leopards, coconut spoons, rice'n'curry, tips and how you HAVE TO pay them, tea plantations and how locals can't buy good tea, temple flowers, 'don't turn your back on Buddha', elephant orphanages, Sigiriya, Galle fort which stood the tsunami while the rest of the city was flooded, coconuts and how sri lankans can make anything out of them, peraheras, sapphires, how tea never grew here before the 19th century, pineapples with salt and chilli - yum!, cinnamon trees, sinhala language with its 58 letters alphabet, sri lankan saris, Buddhas tooth, the rhythms - the drumming and the traditional music, lotuses and violet water lilies, monkeys, hand painted batiks, wood carving, rainbow tree, the landscape - the colour and texture always fascinate and capture me, the grass always seems greener!

Sigh. Looks really wonderful.
A Sinhalese friend of mine tells me how beautiful Sri Lanka is. I believe her, and if only I could see it for myself!

Hi Olga,
The photos are absolutly amazing and (as you know) I was expecting to see these pictures very much. I assure you that I did not became a bit dissapointed...by the contrary. I really intend to go there!. Your trip must have been quite rich enjoying this different culture and the enormous quantity of wild life you could shoot. What do you mean by: "rainy day is the best time for unmarried couples" ? Well, I assure you that married couples also enjoy A LOT those indicent rainy days, laying cozy at the fire place or just hanging around, so... we old people also enjoy those charming moments :)
Loved the picture of the cameleon, so well defined with such beautiful vivid colors. With your "reportage" you made me even more interested in Sri Lanka. Big Hugs, TI

Ti, thanks so much for the comment :) I assure you I didn't mean in any way to discriminate married couples by that note. What I mean is it's untypical in many Asian countries to hold hands or demonstrate any other signs of affection in public - especially if you are not married. So we were not surprised to find all those couples hiding in the botanical garden in the POURING rain. There was literally no one else there expect for those couples :)
