Factotum

Check out this new Factotum cafe in the very heart of Gdansk with its standing out interior design and probably the most unusual menu in town.

The place brings out so many interesting associations and allusions because of it's bohemian, decadent and somewhat S&M interior:

black and white rhomb shaped tiled floors, shiny black plexiglass wall with 3 old German black typewriters serving as candle holders, old picture frames lit from inside; black leather quilted sofas and heavy upholstered old-style chairs; metallic cushions; little red lamp shades, which are the very zest of this interior.

The place made me feel like I found myself in Germany of the 1940ies, even though it is extremely modern. If you are a 'visual type' person, like me, you'd very much feel at home here. Oh, and the music is very well chosen and goes in line with the whole mood.

Red. AGAIN.

It's startling to step straight from Gdañsk's historic main street into this very modern café-bar, dominated by bright red panels, a suspended ceiling and boxy lighting. The scarlet décor contrasts with its comfy brown armchairs, from which you can sip well-made coffee.. I think I won't lie if I say that Cafe Ferber inspired me to paint the walls red in my apartment..

Red colour goes so well with soft lightning, transparent plastic furniture, big windows, chill out music, and everything else in this cafe - really. We had really very time here with my old university friend Lena, who visited on one of the gray weekends a while ago. Truly comfy, warm and cosy memories...

Almost Weekend

It's been a busy week for me with lots and lots of work, even more snow (with digging out the car every morning!), a little bit of sun, lots of teas with lemon and honey (and candles), taking care of the sick (get better, Susu!), cosy movie evenings at home, a night out with colleagues & friends, sports, shopping, ..., ... Now I need a good loooong night sleep...

Winter Light From My Window

Today when I woke up I was mesmerized by what I saw from my window... I felt like I found myself in a winter fairy tale. It was foggy last night which is why every twig of the tree got glittery icy white and all the trees look magic. Now the sky is not blue anymore and its getting foggy again - it is white and very calm all around. I think this winter is very special around here - a beautiful snowy kingdom. Mice for Good Luck

Last week when walking around Gdansk old town I was lucky to meet a nice lady who was selling her little hand-made creations on Mariacka street. I couldn't resist buying one of her hand-made mice, which are called 'Mice for Good Luck'.

Basia, a Fine Arts Academy graduate and full-time artist, has kindly agreed to tell me a bit more about her little creatures. 'My mice are like small works of art for me, each one of them has a separate life, and is a mixture of emotions which I experienced while creating it.'

Every person who 'adopts' a mouse created by Basia gets a guarantee of it being one of a kind - this is one of the rules of Basia's work, she wants each and every person who buys a mouse to feel unique.

Mice's bellies are stuffed with rice not only because some believe that rice has to do with good luck, but also because the seeds enclosed in fabrics give the impression of constant movement and also are an allusion to something 'live'.

'We all live in a complicated reality which is so difficult to embrace and the fact that people stop by to have a look at my creations keeps me going and proves that these little bodies radiate some positive energy. I see people smile and react to my mice and this is very important for me.'

Gotyk House, which I mentioned in one of my previous posts about Gdansk is one of the hostels, which I have never stayed in only because it is located in the city where I live. Still, it keeps intriguing me with its location and the interiors to the extent that I really start thinking about spending a night there!

The hostel is located in the very heart of the old town, in the most beautiful street in Gdańsk - Mariacka. The old house built in 1451 was transformed into comfortable ancient styled guest house.

It seems like a place where modernity unites with history... All the small details in the house help to reflect the spirit of the past of old Gdańsk - when I look at this building and the surroundings they remind me of the knights and crusades epoch. The comfortable and stylish rooms and the interiors of Gotyk House provide the unique charm and ambience. I recommend to visit the website of the hostel as well - it provides many details, plus has lovely design, graphics and music.

Cukier Artist

If your life seems a bit dull all you need to do is sweeten it up a bit! Try buying some good candy and I'm sure some things will seem not as bad and complicated as before :) In one of my previous posts I mentioned this little shop of handmade candy in Gdańsk, which makes and sells candy and I thought it was worth providing some extra detail about it.

The shop is called Ciu Ciu and it is a place where candy is being produced right in front of you. So if you are interested in the whole process - just drop by this shop and there is a great possibility you will see everything with your own eyes during your first visit.

You will also be treated to some fresh candy which was just cut and is still hot and you will be surrounded by all sorts and colours imaginable of packed sweets and lollipops. TI, I especially hope that you will like this post for a reason you might be guessing already of ;)

Fuchsia Inspired...

I keep getting amazed at the number of stylish funky cafes being opened in Gdańsk area and in general in Poland. They range from super modern to being packed with antiques, each has it's own unique design, concept and character.

Cafe Kawusia which I mentioned in my previous post about Gdańsk was most probably inspired by the fuchsia flower - at least this is what immediately came to my mind when I walked in.

The word Kawusia can be translated from Polish as 'your lovely little cup of coffee' - this is what diminutive suffixes in some languages can do to a word :) And it is a lovely place where one can enjoy a good coffee in a pleasant interior.

There are no fuchsias in the cafe, but here is a photo of one, which is so beautiful and seems to be a good match as far as colours are concerned...
