Chinese New Year

Happy belated Chinese New Year!!

They say this year will be especially good to those born in the year of Dragon ;).
Well, being just a modest rooster (not to say chicken:)) I'm very happy for all the dragons.
I've just learned some pretty curious things about those born in the year of rooster, which even were surprisingly spot on (I'm usually very cynical as far as astrology and those type of things are concerned).
And now please tell me - what 'animal' are you?

3 weeks in China in 2008. As if it happened yesterday...

Stay In A Hostel... Feel At Home!

In continuation of our China trip story today's post is devoted to the next stop we made in in Xi'an and about Xiangzimen hostel we stayed in.

It is said that the brother of the Song dynasty Emperor, Zhao Kuang Yin used to reside here in this very building, which has over 200 years of history, and for this reason has been especially preserved in Ming dynasty style by the Xi'an government. It is the only building of its type in the whole of northwest China, and is divided into two main parts: the front 'siheyuan' with it's open-air courtyards and exquisite masonry, and the back with wooden panelling recreated in traditional ancient style.

The charming atmosphere, great traditional interior designs and friendly staff will instantly make you feel at home.

This is how the entry to our room looked like:

And I honestly couldn't stop taking pictures of all the traditional decorations surrounding us!

Inspired by China

Continuing yesterday's topic - here is what I came up with right after we got back home from our trip to China:

When I travel I always end up leaving some of the old tickets, maps, brochures, leaflets and cards (It's just impossible to throw them away!)- so it is always easy to put them up together afterwards. The Chinese board turned out to be pretty packed with stuff - like China with people, great places to visit and stay, historical heritage and of course impressions!

Chinese Hostels

Last September we embarked on the biggest trip of our life - to China! The biggest not because of the distance we took to get there (US would be the furthest destination we've been to) but rather because it was a trip with a tight schedule (to see as much as we can!). We had quite a long list of destinations with many places to stay at - which were important in order to get good rest and enjoy our vacation. We spent 3 weeks in China and covered around 5600 KM altogether - traveling by train, plane, bus, ship, on foot and what not..! Here is how our route looked like: Beijing - Pingyao - Taiyuan - Xi'an - Chongqing - Yichang - Wuhan - Shanghai - Beijing. We mostly stayed in hostels and were lucky to find some really great ones!

Yamen hostel - was the first of those great hostels we stayed at in China and after it - it was quite easy to find similar ones - as they all belong to Utels - an association of youth hostels and low budget hotels in China. Situated in the very heart of Pingyao old town - this hostel is an ideal place to stay:

The hostel occupies a very old traditional Chinese building, which reminds about hutongs and has a beautiful courtyad:

The rooms are very simple, but gorgeous in their simplicity. The furniture in the room is antique, which is also mentioned on the card you find in the room.

There are typical paper carving works on your windows and you get a perfect chance to sleep on traditional Chinese brick bed, which originally could be heated from beneath during winter times:

If you are tired after a long walk in town you can enjoy a good lunch in the guest area for more than affordable prices and simply hang out - as the place is amazing!

I think this is my last post about hostels in China - many of the hostels we have been to are great and somewhat different.

Chinese Paper Cutting

This art form is very popular in China but is hard to come across in Europe - at least I have never seen anything similar to this. If you have - leave a comment, I'm very curious! It existed in China for thousands of years with a long history and different themes and designs. The oldest surviving paper cut out is a symmetrical circle from the 6th century found in Xinjiang. You can visit the blog of Mr Lee - an artist carving paper cut art works. He ezhibits his works there and demonstrates the actual way he is carving on paper:

The blog is also full of pictures about China reflecting traditions and lifestyle and also has its Travelling in China series.

Here are paper cuts I found on the window of my hostel room when I was staying in Pingyao during my trip through China last September. I like how they look together with those old window frames. Will be posting more photos from China soon.
